O’Donnell Roofing in Havertown, operating for more than 100 years, was one of 12 businesses earning a 2025 Family-Owned Business Award by the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Kevin O’Donnell, owner and CEO of O’Donnell Roofing, said his priority is to protect the reputation of the company that four generations have built through hard work, craftsmanship, and trust, writes Lindsey Nolen for Philadelphia Business Journal.
O’Donnell Roofing was founded in 1924 by Clement Aloysius O’Donnell Sr., Kevin’s great-grandfather.
The company started in a sheet metal fabrication shop in West Philadelphia as a roofing and heating business.
Over time, the company has grown from three employees to more than 100. Company revenue was $15.7 million in 2024.
“My great-grandfather had an entrepreneurial spirit,” O’Donnell said. “I don’t think the intention was ever to grow a business, but through the generations, we’ve kept pushing forward.”
In the 1980s, Kevin’s father, Larry, shifted the company’s focus from mass-market work to specialty roofing, which only a few companies can offer.
“It’s more like an art,” O’Donnell said. “Not many companies can do what we do. Maybe 2 percent.”
It added solar in 2006, and in 2022, it launched O’Donnell Solar.
